Christian-Muslim Dialogue Committee, Duquesne University

One of the major missions of the committee is to promote and facilitate ongoing intercultural and interreligious dialogue in parts of Africa that are experiencing continued social conflicts and violence, especially Northern Nigeria. The committee is intent on working with academic and social institutions in Africa who will facilitate an end to ongoing religious and communal conflicts using available academic and social tools. While Africa is the primary focus of this committee, it is hoped that its activities will eventually extend beyond Africa and facilitate dialogic interactions in other parts of the world that may benefit from its resources and support.

More About Us:

This committee was inaugurated by the former Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Professor Al Labriola in February 2009, with the mandate to explore material and human resources available at Duquesne to facilitate ongoing Muslim-Christian dialogue in different parts of the world, especially in Northern Nigeria. The committee consists of faculty members of the university from different departments, including philosophy, sociology, and philosophy as well as interested faculty and staff from the Nursing School and Office of Research. This committee has hosted a major seminar and other public lecture events that have attracted hundreds of people from both the Duquesne community and members of the public. The committee has so far enjoyed the support and partnership of CERIS (Consortium For Educational Resources on Islamic Studies), the Journal of Interreligious Dialogue (JIRD), several departments in the college as well as the Office of Research, and the local Muslim community.

The committee consists of multi-disciplinary faculty whose major objectives are that of exploring the social, cultural, philosophical, historical, political, and religious roots and solutions of existing conflicts in different societies of the world, especially Africa. All members appointed to this committee are working on voluntary basis. The committee has been involved in public lectures and seminars meant to promote and educate people on the value and indispensability of effective interreligious and intercultural dialogue. The committee has applied to the college for funding of annual seminar on interreligious dialogue, to advance its goals of advocating and promoting meaningful interreligious dialogue between Christians and people of other faith traditions, with particular emphasis on Muslim-Christian dialogue.
